IBM 3592 (Enterprise Tape)
The IBM 3592 format is IBM’s proprietary enterprise tape standard, used in IBM TS1100 and TS1200 series tape systems. It is not compatible with LTO or DLT drives. The format is common in mainframe and high-end enterprise environments.

AIT was Sony’s enterprise tape format, widely used in the mid-2000s. The format is fully discontinued but significant archives exist that require media for ongoing access or migration projects.

DAT (Digital Audio Tape) was widely used in small-business and workstation backup environments before LTO became cost-effective at smaller scales.

How do I know which LTO generation my drive uses?
Check the drive model number. Most LTO drives include the generation in the model name: an HPE Ultrium 45000 is an LTO-9 drive; an IBM TS2280 is LTO-8. Your tape library console or management software will also identify the drive generation and compatible media. If you are uncertain, share the drive model number with us and we will confirm the correct media before sourcing.
Can I use LTO-7 tape in an LTO-9 drive?
No. The LTO backward compatibility rule is two-generation read, one-generation write. An LTO-9 drive reads LTO-9 and LTO-8 tapes, and writes to both. It does not read or write LTO-7 or earlier. To use LTO-7 media, you need an LTO-7 or LTO-8 drive.
What is LTO-7 M8 format?
LTO-7 M8 is a specific variant of LTO-7 tape formatted to 9TB native capacity (versus the standard 6TB) when written by an LTO-8 drive. The cartridge is physically the same as a standard LTO-7 tape but initialized at the higher capacity by the LTO-8 drive. M8-formatted tapes can only be read by LTO-8 drives — they are not backward compatible with LTO-7 drives. Not all LTO-8 drives support M8 formatting; verify your drive supports it before purchasing LTO-7 for M8 use.
What is the difference between re-certified and refurbished tape media?
Re-certified tape media has been tested against manufacturer specifications using our quality protocol — physical inspection, software testing, and Phoenix Process rejuvenation — and certified to perform like new.
