U.S. EPA StorageTek SL8500 Tape Library Decommissioning
The Challenge
WEBUY deinstalled and removed a StorageTek SL8500 tape library for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The system included approximately 6,000 LTO-8 and T10000 tapes along with multiple enterprise tape drives, making the engagement a combined library-removal and media-disposition project.
A StorageTek SL8500 is a large enterprise tape-library platform built to manage high-capacity archival environments. Removing one requires planning for the library structure, installed drives, internal media inventory, component handling, staging, and transportation.
The U.S. EPA project also included approximately 6,000 LTO-8 and T10000 tapes. This meant the physical library could not be treated separately from the media and drive assets contained within it.
The agency needed a team capable of deinstalling the system, removing it from the site, and keeping the library, drives, and thousands of tape cartridges organized as one project.
Our Solution
Project scoping. WEBUY defined the engagement around three connected asset groups: the SL8500 library, the installed enterprise tape drives, and approximately 6,000 LTO-8 and T10000 cartridges.
Deinstallation planning. The team prepared for the controlled shutdown, disconnection, and physical breakdown required to move a large tape library from an enterprise environment.
Library removal. The SL8500 was deinstalled and removed from the customer site, eliminating the need for the agency to coordinate a separate rigging or equipment-removal vendor.
Media and drive coordination. Tape cartridges and drives were incorporated into the same removal scope so the supporting assets stayed aligned with the library project.
Disposition evaluation. The library hardware, drives, and media could then be reviewed by asset category for reuse, recovery, data treatment, or other approved disposition.
Results & Impact
WEBUY completed the deinstallation and removal of the StorageTek SL8500 and coordinated the associated inventory of approximately 6,000 LTO-8 and T10000 tapes plus multiple tape drives.
The combined approach simplified a complex enterprise project. Instead of separating equipment removal, tape-media handling, and asset recovery among multiple providers, the agency had one coordinated scope covering the full library environment.
